AstraZeneca is to end a long-running drug programme aimed at combating gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), the biggest cause of heartburn and other related ailments. The new programme is part of the AstraZeneca strategy to reduce the number of drugs in the market by at least 60 per cent by 2033, the company said.
The new programme is part of a programme which AstraZeneca has agreed to co-operate with the AstraZeneca PPI Group to bring to market the heartburn medicine Nexium. The Nexium is used to treat adults with heartburn, indigestion or GERD, and for acid reflux and acid reflux disease. The treatment is only available in the European Union but will be available in the United States.
The programme will be used to reduce the number of heartburn drugs in the market by 60 per cent from January 2006 to March 2010, the AstraZeneca PPI Group said in a statement.
The Nexium treatment is intended for patients who cannot tolerate or are not able to tolerate the side-effects of the acid-suppressing drug, ranitidine. The drug is intended for patients who have frequent heartburn, acid regurgitation and/or dyspepsia and who have a history of heartburn before a recent prescription. In addition, the Nexium is intended for patients who have gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) but have other medical conditions. AstraZeneca will also fund a pilot trial for a new drug for GERD which would be taken on a weekly basis to monitor its effectiveness, effectiveness and tolerability.
The trial would be carried out at four different sites in the European Union and in the United States. AstraZeneca will also be responsible for the cost of the trial, which would have been available in the United States from May 2008 to October 2010.

How to use Nexium:
Esomeprazole is available in two forms: a liquid form (liquid) and an oral tablet. Nexium is typically taken orally with water.
